Description

Slate grey chenille over a tall back, on a base that never quite settles — the Lull Chenille Rocking Armchair ends up being the seat in a lounge that people drift towards once the television is off and the room has gone quiet. Nothing about it is upright furniture: it is soft, it is low to sit down onto, and it is always about to move.

The base it rocks on is 74.5cm long, and all of that length has to sit on one surface. Put the edge of a rug or a doorway strip anywhere inside it and the base crosses that edge on every stroke. The base is also narrower across than the seat above it, which you find out the first time you lean out sideways to pick something up off the floor.

  • Metal Where It Rocks — The rocking base is metal with rubberwood legs standing on it. The part doing the moving is the metal one, and the timber is the part you see. Two materials, each where it earns its place.
  • A Tall Back — The backrest is 61cm of upholstery, enough to keep your shoulders against the chair as it moves rather than holding yourself upright through the stroke.
  • Chenille Over New Foam — The two layers you actually touch are a chenille cover and new foam under it — a soft-piled surface over a filling that keeps its shape, which is the pairing that matters on a chair people stay in.
  • Heels On The Floor — The seat sits 42cm up, low enough for most adults to keep both heels down, and on a rocker your heels are the controls. Starting it and stopping it happen without you thinking about either.
  • Low Arms, Loose Shoulders — The armrests stand 55cm off the floor over a 42cm seat, low enough that your shoulders drop instead of riding up. High arms would undo the posture this chair is built around.
