Dark green velvet held in a wooden frame, the seat wider across than it is deep: the Aalto Velvet Armchair is a chair for a room that has run out of floor — under a window, on the short wall a wardrobe has already taken most of, in the gap between a bed and a door. Its frame is on the outside, the upholstery sitting inside the wood rather than covering it.
Pushed back, the top of the backrest meets the wall before the seat does. The frame stays out in the room, and the gap that leaves behind your back will not close. So the space to allow is 69.5cm out from the skirting board, not the depth of seat you can see. Mark 69.5cm on the floor and swing the wardrobe door across it, which is usually the whole decision.
