Description

An armchair standing next to a sofa gets judged against the sofa rather than on its own. The Amelia Rubberwood Armchair is dark grey chenille with a back that keeps climbing above the cushion, and in most living rooms it ends up angled towards the sofa already there. Its legs are bare rubberwood, pale and uncovered: a second colour in the room, and the one that has to match.

Floor to seat, this one measures 41.5cm, and that is a line your own sofa either clears or does not. Above 41.5, whoever takes the armchair looks slightly up at the people opposite all evening — nothing on paper, plain once everybody sits down. Below it, this becomes the higher seat and the one people get out of first.

Beside a sofa that sits well above that line, this is the wrong chair. The Windsor Linen Armchair - Light Grey holds its seat at 50cm, with more back above it.

  • It Ships In Pieces — Assembly is required, so it arrives as a carton rather than as a finished chair. Worth knowing if the room it is going into is up a narrow stair — the box goes up in pieces, the chair would not have to.
  • Texture Without Sheen — Chenille is a looped yarn. It reads as texture rather than as shine, so the same dark grey looks the same from every seat in the room. Velvet does the opposite, changing shade with the angle you look from.
  • Nothing To Adjust — No recline, no swivel, no lever. What you sit in on the first day is the shape it keeps — the trade a fixed frame makes is fewer positions and nothing to set, unlock or reset.
  • Cloth And Timber — Two materials only. Chenille above, rubberwood below. There is one line where they meet, and it runs where the upholstery stops and the leg begins.
  • Dark Grey For Traffic — Dark grey is the shade to pick when the chair goes in the room people actually use, because marks that would show on a pale chair do not read on this one. Lint and pet hair are the exception, and they lift off with a brush.
