Run a hand across the back of the Emily Velvet Occasional Chair - Black and the buttons come first — black velvet drawn into a tufted back, antique brass-tone studs, walnut-finished rubberwood legs. The back stops low, so that row of buttons lands at the small of your back rather than between your shoulders. It is a bedroom chair.

45cm between the floor and the seat puts it under the height most people rise from unaided, and the arms will not help: they are rolled, round on top, with no flat edge to take the heel of a hand. What it buys you is the other direction. You can reach the floor without getting off it — a shoe, a bag strap, the plug behind the bed.

  • Springs, Not Just Foam — Under the high-density sponge there is an S-spring deck, so the seat pushes back rather than only squashing down. It is why a chair that looks decorative stands up to being the one somebody actually uses.
  • Eucalyptus Under The Velvet — The internal frame is eucalyptus hardwood, and it is a large part of why one chair weighs 29kg. What you are moving is timber, not a shell of foam. Plan two hands and a clear path when it changes rooms.
  • Studs Follow The Edge — A line of antique brass-tone studs runs along the edge where the velvet is fixed down — the one warm-coloured thing on an otherwise black chair, and the detail that makes it read as a made object rather than a covered box.
  • Velvet Built For Use — The pile is 100% polyester rather than a natural velvet, which is the hard-wearing end of that family. It recovers from the crush marks a silk or cotton pile would keep, so daily sitting does not leave a permanent shadow.
  • Room To Vacuum Under — Walnut-finished rubber wood legs raise the chair 11cm off the floor — enough for a vacuum head to pass beneath the front, and enough floor to stay visible under a chair that is 98.5cm wide, which is what stops something this broad reading as a bench.
