At 30cm the sleeping surface sits below the height of your own knee, so a guest gets up off it hands-first, the way you get off a futon, rather than swinging their legs down from mattress height. They also sleep on it in sections: a fold-out has joins where a mattress has none, and a folded blanket under the sheet takes the edge off them.
