Fluted from top to bottom, the shell back of the Neil Velvet Armchair flares into two shallow wings where it ends; below it the green velvet stops at four bare rubberwood legs, left unpainted. It is a chair for one person and a book, in the part of a lounge the sofa never reaches, or wherever one chair is wanted and two would crowd it.
Between the arms it measures 49cm, and that is the width you actually sit in — the shell opens out wider than that above them, but at seat level the arms are where it stops. At 49cm there is no folding your legs up beside you and no hooking a knee over an arm. You sit squared into it and upright, the way you sit to read rather than to watch a film.
